Between Rock and Snow

1.Sierra Nevada 아래 펼쳐진 바위의 세계 | A World of Rock Beneath the Sierra Nevada

California의 Lone Pine 서쪽에 자리한 Alabama Hills에 들어서면, 둥글고 거대한 바위들이 끝없이 이어지는 독특한 풍경이 펼쳐집니다. 멀리 솟아 있는 Sierra Nevada의 날카로운 산 능선과 부드럽고 둥근 바위들이 강한 대비를 이루며, 다른 곳에서는 쉽게 볼 수 없는 장면을 만들어냅니다.

처음 이곳을 바라보았을 때 저는 수많은 바위들이 서로 겹치고 기대어 있는 모습에 압도되었습니다. 가까이 다가갈수록 바위마다 모양과 표정이 달랐고, 길을 따라 조금만 움직여도 전혀 새로운 구도가 나타났습니다.

West of Lone Pine, California, Alabama Hills opens into an extraordinary world of massive rounded rocks. The softly weathered formations create a striking contrast with the jagged ridges of the Sierra Nevada rising in the distance.

When I first looked across this landscape, I was overwhelmed by the number of rocks layered and balanced across the hills. Up close, every formation seemed to have its own shape and character, and even a small change in position revealed an entirely new composition.

2. 오랜 시간이 만든 화강암 풍경 | Granite Shaped by Time

Alabama Hills의 둥글고 기묘한 바위들은 오랜 세월 동안 자연의 풍화 작용을거치며 지금의  모습을 갖게 되었습니다. Sierra Nevada와 Alabama Hills는 같은 계열의 화강암으로 이루어져 있지만, 서로 다른 침식과 풍화의 결과로 매우 다른 모습의 풍경을 보여줍니다.

사진가에게 이 바위들은 단순한 돌이 아닙니다. 둥근 곡선과 거친 표면, 작은 틈과 거대한 덩어리들이 빛을 받을 때마다 새로운 형태와 질감을 보여줍니다.

The rounded and unusual formations of Alabama Hills were shaped over immense periods of time by natural weathering. Although the Alabama Hills and the nearby Sierra Nevada share granitic origins, weathering and erosion have given the two landscapes dramatically different appearances.

To a photographer, these formations are far more than stone. Their curves, rough surfaces, narrow openings, and massive forms reveal new textures and shapes whenever the light changes.

3. 자연이 만든 아치와 창 | Natural Arches and Windows

이곳을 걷다 보면 바위 사이에 자연적으로 만들어진 아치와 작은 창들을 만날 수 있습니다. 어떤 아치는 작고 섬세하며, 어떤 아치는 거대한 바위 사이로 하늘과 산을 액자처럼 보여줍니다.

저는 특히 아치 사이로 들어오는 빛을 좋아합니다. 아침이나 늦은 오후, 햇빛이 바위 틈을 통과하면 밝은 부분과 깊은 그림자가 한 화면 안에서 만나며 강렬한 장면을 만들어냅니다. 같은 아치도 시간과 계절에 따라 전혀 다른 모습으로 보입니다.

Natural arches and small windows appear throughout the rocks of Alabama Hills. Some are delicate and intimate, while others frame the sky and distant mountains like stone picture frames.

I am especially drawn to the light that passes through these openings. In the morning or late afternoon, sunlight entering between the rocks brings illuminated stone and deep shadow together in a single frame. The same arch can look completely different as the hour and season change.

4. 아침빛이 깨우는 바위 | Rocks Awakening in Morning Light

이른 아침의 Alabama Hills는 고요합니다. 아직 차가운 공기가 남아 있는 시간, 첫 햇빛이 바위의 한쪽 면에 닿기 시작하면 어둠 속에 있던 형태들이 천천히 모습을 드러냅니다.

아침의 빛은 강하지 않지만 부드럽고 섬세합니다. 바위의 색과 질감을 조용히 드러내고, Sierra Nevada의 높은 산들과 함께 차분한 풍경을 만들어냅니다. 카메라를 들고 그 변화를 기다리는 시간 자체가 저에게는 이곳을 기억하게 하는 중요한 순간입니다.

Early morning in Alabama Hills is quiet. While the air is still cool, the first sunlight begins to touch one side of the rocks, slowly revealing forms that had been hidden in darkness.

Morning light is gentle rather than harsh. It quietly brings out the colors and textures of the stone and creates a peaceful relationship between the Alabama Hills and the high Sierra Nevada beyond. For me, simply waiting with a camera as that transformation unfolds is part of the experience.

5. 저녁 햇살에 강렬해지는 화강암 | Granite Glowing in the Evening Sun

아침의 부드러운 빛도 아름답지만, 제가 Alabama Hills에서 특히 강하게 기억하는 것은 저녁 햇살입니다. 해가 낮아지면서 따뜻한 빛이 화강암에 비치면 바위들은 황금빛과 주황빛으로 강렬하게 변합니다.

빛을 직접 받는 바위와 그 뒤에 드리워지는 짙은 그림자의 대비가 커지면서, 낮에는 평범하게 보였던 바위의 형태가 훨씬 극적으로 드러납니다. 그 순간에는 바위 하나하나가 빛을 받아 살아나는 것처럼 느껴집니다. 저는 바로 이런 순간 때문에 같은 장소를 여러 번 바라보고 또 사진으로 남기게 됩니다.

The soft morning light is beautiful, but what I remember most strongly about Alabama Hills is the evening sun. As the sun drops lower, warm light strikes the granite and the rocks begin to glow in intense shades of gold and orange.

The contrast between sunlit stone and deep shadow becomes stronger, revealing forms that can appear almost ordinary in midday light. At those moments, each rock seems to come alive. It is this transformation that makes me want to keep looking—and keep photographing the same landscape again and again.

6. 바위 사이에 남아 있는 서부영화의 시간 | Echoes of the Old West

Alabama Hills를 걷다 보면 오래된 서부영화 속으로 들어온 듯한 느낌을 받을 때가 있습니다. 이곳은 1920년대부터 Hollywood 영화 촬영지로 사용되어 왔고, 수백편의 영화와 수많은 광고가 이 독특한 풍경을 배경으로 촬영되었습니다.

오래된 서부영화와 관련된 장소들을 생각하며 거대한 바위와 흙길을 바라보고 있으면, 과거의 말발굽 소리와 영화 속 장면들이 어딘가에 남아 있는 듯한 느낌이 듭니다. 그래서인지 저는 이곳에서 단순한 자연의 시간뿐 아니라 오래된 영화의 흔적까지 함께 느끼게 됩니다.

Walking among the rocks of Alabama Hills can sometimes feel like stepping into an old Western film. Hollywood filmmakers began using this landscape in the 1920s, and hundreds of movies as well as many commercials have since been filmed among these distinctive formations.

Looking across the massive rocks and dirt roads while thinking about that history, I can almost imagine scenes from an earlier era unfolding here. For me, Alabama Hills carries not only the passage of natural time, but also echoes of its long connection with the movies.

7. 바위 미로 속에서 느낀 작은 두려움 | A Slight Fear Inside the Maze of Rocks

Alabama Hills의 바위들은 멀리서 보면 아름답지만, 그 사이로 깊숙이 들어가 바라보면 또 다른 느낌을 줍니다. 크고 작은 바위들이 너무나 오밀조밀하게 이어져 있어 어느 순간에는 거대한 미로 안에 들어와 있는 것처럼 느껴졌습니다.

계속 안으로 들어가다 보면 방향을 잃고 다시 길을 찾지 못할 것 같은 생각이 들어 살짝 두렵기도 했습니다. 하지만 그 작은 두려움 때문에 오히려 자연의 크기와 힘을 더 강하게 느낄 수 있었습니다. Alabama Hills는 제게 편안하게 바라보기만 하는 풍경이 아니라, 아름다움과 신비로움, 그리고 약간의 긴장감까지 함께 느끼게 하는 곳입니다.

From a distance, the rocks of Alabama Hills are beautiful, but moving deeper among them creates a very different feeling. Large and small formations stand so closely together that at times I felt as though I had entered an enormous natural maze.

I even felt a slight fear that if I continued too far, I might lose my sense of direction and have difficulty finding my way back. Yet that uncertainty made me feel the scale and power of the landscape even more strongly. Alabama Hills is not simply a peaceful view to me; it holds beauty, mystery, and just enough tension to make the experience unforgettable.

8. 사진가의 시선으로 본 Alabama Hills | Alabama Hills Through a Photographer’s Eyes

제가 Alabama Hills에서 가장 오래 바라보게 되는 것은 바위 자체보다 그 위를 지나가는 빛입니다. 아침과 저녁, 햇빛의 높이와 방향에 따라 같은 화강암도 전혀 다른 색과 표정을 보여줍니다. 자연 아치 사이로 스며드는 빛, 바위 표면을 스치는 따뜻한 햇살, 깊은 그림자 속에서 조금씩 드러나는 형태를 바라보며 저는 자연사진에서 빛이 얼마나 중요한지를 다시 느낍니다.

Alabama Hills는 화려한 색으로 가득한 곳은 아닙니다. 그러나 빛이 바위에 닿는 순간, 단순해 보이던 풍경이 강렬하고 깊은 모습으로 변합니다. 바로 그 변화가 제가 이곳을 기억하는 이유입니다.

What holds my attention longest at Alabama Hills is not only the rock itself, but the light moving across it. Morning and evening, changes in the height and direction of the sun give the same granite completely different colors and expressions. Watching light enter a natural arch, brush across a warm stone surface, or slowly reveal a form from deep shadow reminds me how essential light is to the way I experience nature through photography.

Alabama Hills is not a landscape filled with brilliant color everywhere. Yet when light touches the rocks, something simple can suddenly become powerful and profound. That transformation is what stays with me.
